About Mawson House

Mawson House, located at 51 King William Rd, Unley, is a 1909 Edwardian Queen Anne-style heritage property.

Built by George Branson, it features distinctive crenulations, a tower, and a massive basement strongroom and remains one of Adelaide’s most iconic buildings.

The property was eventually sold to prominent Adelaide jeweller Michael Schlank in 1919.

Schlank

installed a heavy-duty strongroom in the arched cellars, where high-value jewellery was safely stored.

In the 1960s, the mansion was converted into a popular upmarket French restaurant named Chateau Fort by French immigrant and Cordon Bleu cook Bernard Vigor.

By 1992, the property was acquired by the Sporting Car Club of South Australia and now serves as the clubs official headquarters and club rooms.

Over its journey, the Mawson House has even served as a popular nightclub, known for attracting Australian and international cricket stars. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Today, Mawson House is a popular local function and event space, housing several unique function rooms available for conferences, art exhibitions, AGM’s, club meetings and other corporate and private events.

 Reg Sparks Room

The largest space available is the Reg Sparks Room.

Holding up to 150 people cabaret-style or 200 theatre-style, the room includes an extensive stage (capable of displaying cars), a dance floor, and a private bar.

In the past the venue has been dressed to accommodate weddings and engagements, conferences, AGM’s and media days.

Fitted out with large screens and AV equipment, the Reg Sparks room offers external access as well as internal access, flanked by amenities and other hospitality services.

 Percy Wien Smith Room

The Percy Wien Smith Room is in the original Sandstone Villa with direct access from the front garden. The room has beautiful Art Nouveau windows and decor and a large mirror wall, providing a luxurious ambience for your special event.

This room is ideally suited for meetings, boardroom events, dining or cocktail events or even a gallery space, with a capacity of 50 to 80 guests.

There is a private bar and kitchenette and it also offers multimedia capability with a big screen, internet, a lectern and conference furniture.

Gosse Bar & Lounge

For a more private event, The Gosse Bar Lounge offers a capacity for up to 60 guests.

It features the building’s iconic stone arches and walls and is fondly remembered by Adelaideans as the night venue which attracted famous local and international sporting stars and celebrities throughout the 80s and 90s.

The Gosse Bar has also been used by movie and TV production companies and features its own personal bar and kitchen.
